Kilian Jornet e Emelie Forsberg, freschi campioni della Ultra Series 2013, saranno al via in entrambe le gare!  Effettivamente Kilian con 300 punti ha già in tasca il titolo Sky con tre vittorie nelle precedenti gare.  Anche con i 20 punti extra che assegna la gara finale nessuno può togliergli il titolo.
 
La stagione skyrunning ha visto Luis Alberto Hernando (adidas) come il principale rivale di Kilian in molte gare. Attualmente è secondo con 254 punti, e può mantenere la sua posizione con un certo margine di sicurezza.
Tofol Castanyer (Salomon), già campione SWS nel 2010, si è concentrato come Luis anche su distanze più lunghe ma non sembra in grado di potere superare  Luis che lo ha preceduto di recente al Cavalls del Vent (100k).
 
La gara femminile sarà invece molto combattuta tra Emelie Forsberg e Stevie Kremer.   Sono divise solo da 10 punti nel ranking.  Chi vince la gara di domenica, vincerà anche il titolo.  Tra le aspiranti al podio ci sono però la campionessa 2011 delle World Series Oihana Kortazar che torna alle competizioni sky dopo mesi, mentre i colori italiani sono affidati a Silvia Serafini  sempre in grado di competere al top in tutte le distanze.  Tutte queste atlete sono del team Salomon.
 
Tornando al campo maschile, l’americano Alex Nichols (inov-8) attualmente 4° nel ranking e secondo nella Pikes Peak Marathon, sarà al via per migliorare la sua posizione.  Dovrà però guardarsi le spalle dal compagno di team il norvegese Erik Haugsnes, 6° nella classifica SWS e che alla Mont-Blanc Marathon era finito 5°, mentre nel VK era al 3° posto alle spalle di Kilian.
 
Il francese Nicolas Pianet (New Balance) attualmente 5°, sarà in gara in entrambe le discipline, mentre il giovane marocchino Zaid Ait Malek di matrice spagnola dopo l’eccellente 4° posto a Zegama, vedrà di confermare il suo talento anche qui.  Tra i top da segnalare anche lo spagnolo Francesc Marti mentre tra gli italiani solo un miracolo può rimettere in sella Pivk Tadei, Campione Italiano e brillante terzo a Zegama.  Infatti, l’elenco degli infortunati di fine stagione è molto pesante e non sono al via  nomi come  Marco De Gasperi, Nicola Golinelli e Didier Zago mentre Pivk spera in un recupero all’ultimo minuto.
 
Questo magnifico gruppo di atleti che gareggia nella Limone Extreme SkyRace® troverà qualcosa di diverso rispetto alle precedenti gare Sky.
Il percorso è solo di 23.5 km, simile per molti versi alla Dolomites SkyRace®. Non è in alta quota ma sempre su terreno tecnico e verticale, sia in salita che in discesa.  Un giro ad anello, con 2.002m di dislivello che comincia e finisce sulle rive del Lago di Garda assicurando uno spettacolare panorama in ogni suo tratto.  Non deve trarre in inganno la location, tutta la corsa è molto tecnica, tra rocce calcaree e tratti molto esposti e verticali sia in salita che in discesa. L’ultima edizione è stata vinta a tempo record da Marco De Gasperi in 2h13’34 e da Debora Cardone in 3h02’08”.  Non c’è dubbio che questi tempi saranno a rischio visto i concorrenti in campo.
 
Prima  della SkyRace® di domenica, venerdì 11 ottobre si corre quasi in “notturna” il Vertical Grèste de la Mughéra, finale della Vertical Series.  Oltre a Kilian già menzionato, in campo maschile è presente al completo il fortissimo team La Sportiva con Urban Zemmer, campione Vertical 2012, attualmente 4° nel ranking con Marco Facchinelli, leader attuale, che deve finire almeno al 3° posto per vincere la Vertical Series 2013. Se Zemmer vincesse (e Facchinelli finisse 4°), potrebbe confermare invece il suo titolo in carica.   Altri top del team La Sportiva sono Marco Moletto (7o) e lo sloveno Nejc Kuhar (10°).
Altri candidati per i top ten finali sono gli andorrani Ferran and Xavier Teixido rispettivamene  2° e 6°  nel ranking;  Oscar Casal Mir (5°) e il catalano Joan Freixa (FEEC), 3°. Erik Haugsnes (inov-8) e Kilian, impegnati in entrambe le gare saranno comunque due clienti molto ostici per questi specialisti del VK.
 
Il ranking femminile delle Vertical  Series vede la spagnola Vanesa Ortega al primo posto con 236 punti e Alba Xandri (FEEC) 2°. La campionessa dello scorso anno Laura Orgue (Salomon) è 3° e Silvia Leal (FEEC) 5°. La britannica Tessa Hill (Arc’teryx) è in 4° posizione.  Emelie, come Kilian, è solo 12° nel Vertical ranking avendo una sola gara all’attivo, ma sarà assieme ad Antonella Confortola, un’avversaria scomoda per il podio.  Favorita per la vittoria finale resta la campionessa 2012 Laura Orguè che non ha punti da scartare, ma per la vittoria di gara l’Italia potrà finalmente dire la sua con Antonella.
 
La corsa del VK è veramente impegnativa con tratti verticali e 1.100m di dislivello in 3 km. La gara parte dalla riva del lago all’imbrunire e si conclude al buio, alle luci delle lampade frontali e della segnaletica fluorescente, visibili dal  lago sottostante.  Il record maschile da battere della prima edizione è di 41’10’’ mentre quello femminile è di 56’ 30’’.
 
L’evento segna un’importante occasione per Limone e il comprensorio turistico del lago di Garda, meglio conosciuto per i suoi percorsi di mountain bike e wind surfing.
Altri eventi collaterali sono programmati  in loco per questa doppia festa finale della Skyrunner World Series 2013.
 
La corsa è disegnata e diretta da una leggenda dello skyrunning, Fabio Meraldi che, nonostante un grave incidente in arrampicata avuto ad inizio stagione, è tornato “in sella” per coordinare gli aspetti tecnici di queste due gare.

Kilian Jornet and Emelie,Forsberg, recently crowned 2013 Ultra Series Champions, will compete in both disciplines (! )…Kilian effectively already has the Sky title in his pocket with three clear wins.  Even with the extra 20 points at the final and discarding one race, he can’t be knocked from the top spot.
 
The long skyrunning season has seen Luis Alberto Hernando (adidas) up front with Kilian in many events, pushing hard and achieving great results but even with a win and his current second ranking with 254 points, he could at best maintain his position.  Tofol Castanyer (Salomon), 2010 SWS champion, after a bad skyrunning season early on has been concentrating on the longer distances and is raring to go after taking second to Luis at the recent Cavalls del Vent.
 
The women’s race however is between Emelie Forsberg and Stevie Kremer.  Ten points divide them in the ranking.  The title will go to Sunday’s winner.
2011 World Series champion, Oihana Kortazar makes a welcome come-back and, of course, podium material, while Silvia Serafini will add to the completion for the top slots. These top ladies are all Salomon.
 
Returning to the men’s field, American Alex Nichols (inov-8) is currently ranked 4th and after a second place at Pikes Peak, he will race here to assert his final ranking position.   Look out for Norwegian Erik Haugsnes (inov-8) ranked 6th who made a splash at Mont-Blanc, taking 3rd in the Vertical and 5th in the marathon.
 
Frenchman Nicolas Pianet (New Balance) ranked 5th, will run both disciplines.  Young Moroccan Zaid Ait Malek only raced Zegama, where he placed an excellent 4th but he shows plenty of promise and will no doubt perform well. Spaniard Francesc Marti (FEEC) 9th will also be competing.
 
The season has sadly had a number of important casualties who will be unable to attend:  Marco De Gasperi, Tadei Pivk ,Nicola Golinelli and Didier Zago, the latter two both Arc’teryx.
 
The great field competing in the Limone Extreme SkyRace® will have something a little different to look forward to.  The course is short, 23.5 km, (similar in distance to the Dolomites SkyRace® but with less vertical ascent and descent). The loop, with 2,002m vertical climb, starts and finishes on the shores of Garda Lake, ensuring a spectacular panorama.  Make no mistake, the course is technical, over mostly very rocky limestone, with some very steep and exposed stretches on both the ascent and descent.  Last year’s record time was set by Marco De Gasperi in 2h13’34 and the women’s record by Debora Cardone was 3h02’08”, no doubt times that will fall given the depth of field competing in the final here.
 
Preceding Sunday’s SkyRace® will be the Vertical Grèste de la Mughéra on Friday October 11th, the final Vertical Series final. With the exception of Kilian already mentioned above, the men’s field offers very strong competition with Urban Zemmer (La Sportiva), 2012 champion, currently ranked 4th.  Series leader and team-mate Marco Facchinelli will need to finish in the top three if he wants to keep the title.  If Zemmer takes the win and Facchinelli drops to 4th, he could hold on to his 2012 title.  Italian Marco Moletto (7th) and Slovenian Nejc Kuhar (10th) make up the rest of La Sportiva’s top contenders.
 
Other candidates for the top places include Andorrans Ferran and Xavier Teixido ranked 2nd and 6th respectively;  Oscar Casal Mir (5th) and Spaniard Joan Freixa (FEEC), 3rd. Like Kilian, for the record, Emelie is ranked 12th in the Vertical ranking.
 
The course is a very steep and sharp Vertical with 1,100m vertical gain over 3 km. It climbs straight up from the lake shores starting at dusk, to finish in complete darkness, lit by special torches along the way. The entire spectacle will be reflected in the lake below. The men’s time to beat is 41’10 and the women’s, 56’30”.
 
The events mark an important occasion for Limone, a renowned tourist resort on Lake Garda, better known for mountain biking and wind surfing.  A number of collateral events will take place during the double-final festivities.
 
Course designer and director is none other than skyrunning legend, Fabio Meraldi who, despite a serious accident earlier in the year, will be overseeing the events.
 
Teams also feature in the Skyrunner® World Series ranking and the Sky Series sees FEEC (Catalan Selection) leading the ranking, followed by Salomon, EMF (Basque Country Selection), inov-8, Salomon-Agisko, adidas Trail Running, Salomon Santiveri, Diedre Matxacuca, Scott Sports, Arc’teryx.
 
The Vertical Series is led by La Sportiva, followed by FAM (Andorra), FEEC (Catalan Selection), Arc’teryx and Salomon Santiveri taking the first five places.
