E' cominciata domenica in Francia, sull'atipico tracciato di Arles, la Coppa del mondo skyrunning 2011. Buona la prima per il campionissimo della corsa in montagna marco De Gasperi e l'iridata di skialp Mireia Mirò. Il primo, ripreso un sempre più convinto Luis Hernandez, ha tagliato il traguardo in 37'03", mentre la seconda guadagnava il gradino più alto del podio con crono di 46'20".

Per quanto riguarda la gara maschile, eccellente argento di giornata per il russo – naturalizzato italiano – Michail Mamleev che ha tenuto alti i colori sociali della Valetudo Skyrunning fermando l'orologio sul tempo di 39'19". L'atleta iberico, forse pagando nella seconda parte di gara una partenza troppo sostenuta, si è dovuto accontentare del gradino più basso del podio in 39'44". Da segnalare in 4ª piazza il ritorno del valdostano Jean Pellissier -39'58" -.

Passando alla prova in rosa, alle spalle di una scatenata Mirò, si è piazzata la "signora Dapit", Stephanie Jimenez, dinnanzi alla connazionale Corinne Favre. Una Favre in gioco nella duplice veste di atleta/organizzatore.

Italian Marco De Gasperi opened the 2011 international skyrunning calendar with a new record in the Arles Tech Vertical Kilometre, Sunday, May 8 in the south of France. In a class of his own, he sliced nearly five minutes off the race record in the first stage of the 2011 Skyrunner® World Series, reaching the summit of the 1,000m vertical climb in 37'03". Second was Russian Mikhail Mamleev in 39'15" and third, Spaniard Luis Hernando in 39'47".

The very strong women's field was led by Spaniard Mireia Mirò who closed in 46'28", nearly three minutes ahead of France's Stephanie Jimenez (49'22") and Corinne Favre (49'42"), ex skyrunning world champion and co-organiser of the event. Reigning world champion Emanuela Brizio had an unusually bad day, struggling to the summit in 9th position in 53'26".

The Belmaig VK summitDe Gasperi, twice Vertical Kilometer® world record holder, said "I felt very comfortable with the course and could have gone faster. It's somewhat longer than the other VKs but I believe I can knock some more off today's time."

Mirò's recipe was a little different. After finishing an intensive season of ski mountaineering where she conquered the individual and vertical world titles, her final race was last Sunday where she came second in Italy's famous Mezzalama. Rather than specific training for the Vertical Kilometer®, she conceded herself a week's rest - an excellent choice as it turned out.

To celebrate the day's success, France Skyrunning race organisers Marc Villa and Corinne Favre hosted a lunch for participants, volunteers and supporters with a gigantic, steaming paella, local wines and the season's first cherries from the nearby town of Ceret, renowned for its produce.
